Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

This was the reading at our church this weekend.  Afterwards my wife shared something she read about how the disciples were possibly pushing to just have the crowds go away, the attitude of “they got themselves here and knew how far it is, let them figure out a solution.” Often this is how we see the world and those in a bind too.  I know when I pass a homeless person its easy to rationalize, “well they could just get a job or work to get out of that situation” or when I hear of someone who falls upon hard times that seems self induced it can be easy to default to the thinking that they need to figure it out themselves- we all have hard times.  Yet Jesus doesn’t judge, nor “pass the buck” he solves the problem and takes it on Himself.  What an example to follow……
