Southbound (2433 South Blvd) has been on the pax's list of Taco joints to hit for some time. Ramrod and Turncoat agreed that today would be the day. Turns out we were 2 weeks too late.
Ramrod scooped up Roadie in the Ramrodmobile and rolled in to Southbound just before the preblasted 1145 launch time, and secured a high top for what we expected would be a light crowd, based on the lack of HCs. Turncoat arrived shortly after, and it quickly became apparent that we would only be a threesome. All good – we needed to check this place off our list at some point. We'll stick uptown next week.
Anyway, upon Turncoat's arrival, Ramrod delivered the bad news – Southbound has discontinued its dine-in $2 Taco Tuesday promotion. There are $2 tacos to be had, but only via the take-out window, and limited to (plain sounding) "chicken" and "ground beef" tacos. Apparently this happened within the past 2 weeks. The pax had to pay full freight for their tacos today, which was $4-5 per taco, depending on the type. Our server assured us that it was cool, though, and we wouldn't be disappointed. (Of course, we were, insofar as our meals were suddenly twice as expensive or half as big, but it is what it is….)
On a positive note, there are free chips/salsa, and our service was pretty good and quick.
YHC ordered one "Machaca Beef" taco and one "Carnitas" taco (see menu here), plus a side of refried black beans and red rice. The tacos were good, if not exceptional. Machaca Beef was tasty and slightly sweet, as the ingredients would have suggested. Carnitas was decent, not spectacular. There were a few house sauces that YHC sampled – one mild (which was very runny and definitely mild) and one "hot" (which had some smoked jalepenos, and was hotter than the mild, but not what YHC would call hot).
Overall score 7 / 10. Might try again, although the cost / value probably keeps us away for a bit. Would rather try another new spot or maybe head back to RuRus or Hot Taco.
SIDE NOTE: It appears Babalu is no more. Not sure why, but they definitely could have been a little more clear about the fact that their tableside guac pricing was per person. $20 for guac was pretty outrageous.
Ramrod reports that his scores for Southbound were as follows: 7.4 for the food. 8.5 for service. 0.2 for $2 tacos being 86'd.
