40 the Hard Way

The Pre-ramble

Today's workout was in honor of a former teammate, Navt Lt. (SEAL) Brendan Looney. Brendan was the honorman of Seal class 265 and was part of Seal Team 3. He would have turned 40 last week. Brendan had a favorite saying, "Be Strong. Be Accountable. Never Complain." Brendan rarely spoke, he typically captured your attention with his presence and actions, but when he spoke, you listened.

Brendan was the toughest person I've met in real life. He wasn't the best athlete or the most talented. But he was relentless, he never surrendered, never quit. He was also kind and gentle. He knew who needed to be pushed and knocked upside the head, and who needed mercy. He never left you where you were. He didn't seek glory, he didn't do what he did for himself, he did it to serve those around him. He was the kind of person you never expected to die, but he did, at age 29 in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

Stray asked me to share – a number of articles and stories have been done on Brendan (and his college roommate and best friend Travis Manion), including a book called Brothers Forever. It's worth a read and a great book to give your teenage boys in need of motivation/ inspiration: http://www.amazon.com/Brothers-Forever-Enduring-Transcended-Sacrifice/dp/B01L9FV7Q0

The Thang

One of Brendan's younger brothers posted a workout 40 reps of six different exercises We modified a bit, and did it the hard way / straight through, rather than breaking up the exercises and rotating through them:

  • 40 pullups
  • 40 pushups
  • 40 jump squats
  • 40 squat thrusters w/ cinder block
  • 40 block swings
  • 40 burpees ( + 5 more to finish with Rocket)

In between some of the exercises, we did a few laps and Crocs led us in one mobility moment.

To finish we moseyed to the wall on the side of LFCH for some calf raises, Australian mountain climbers, and some glute, back, ab and hip work. Amen and Kosar were kind enough to lead us through J-Lo and Touch Dem heels, before Goodlife ended us, I mean ended the workout, with 10 burpees. He isn't bold enough to call the old Bunyan 20 burpees at Mary yet…
