4 warriors posted in the chill of the early morning gloom to celebrate YHC’s 5 year F3versary at Emmaus.  My method was simple, get us warmed up fast and keep us there.  Here’s how we kicked off the party:

F3 Q SOURCE DISCUSSION:

Retreating into the inviting warmth of Starbucks, we continued our work in Foundation (F4) – Leadership Development Process.  The topics that we discussed were:

  • Are leaders born or made?
    • A little of both.  While the leadership process will help make a leader, the leader needs to have certain inherent abilities that will help them forge paths.
  • Are there common elements to leadership development?
    • Upcoming leaders need to have the desire to want to build the skills of leadership, and experience will come with opportunity and exposure.
  • Should the LDP be directly controlled by the top of an Organization?
    • While the top of an Organization should provide framework and cultural guidance, the process needs to be owned and executed by great leaders who are directly mentoring those upcoming student-leaders.
  • While schooling and apprenticeship are important in building the leader, the leader is not actually forged until they are given appropriate opportunity by a great leader, and lessons reinforced by episodes of failure.

We were shortly joined by one Gnarly Goat, who added valuable insight into the leadership building process by sharing a time when he was tasked with giving a brief to really shiny Navy brass at the Pentagon.

Overall, it was an insightful conversation with input from many different paths of experience, but all had common themes.

MOLESKIN:

  • Great workout this morning with Jedi, Red October, and Carpetbagger.  I really needed to get back out here and I’m honored and overjoyed that you came out to join me.  The mumblechatter alone was priceless.  We even got into a spirted debate on self defense and the law. Thank you Jedi for the opportunity to lead.  Friday mornings are wisely spent in this arena.
  • These past 5 years have gone by very quickly it seems, but I’ve grown so much that it feels like a lifetime ago when I first stepped out of my car at GCC.  I’ll never forget in the middle of the workout when I was gasping for air and wanting to stop, Springfield just leans in and tells me “It’s you vs you, brother.”  I swear I’ve carried that with me to this day, and likely always will.  Little did I know that I was embarking on a journey that would take me in directions I never realized I could go.  Since then, I’ve completed 2 Quarter Rucks, 2 Heavies, 1 HTL, multiple 5Ks, an 8K, a 10K, and on and on.  I’ve rucked marathons, been up over 60 hours, been beat up beyond belief, totally delirious, and found that I could do even more.  That sense of limitless has seeped into every facet of my life.  I’ve forged bonds in brotherhood that can never break, and found the courage to step up to be a leader in my family, my workplace, and my community.  I’ve received so much and I couldn’t be more grateful to all you HIMs who inspire me to be better every single day.  Thank you all from the bottom of my soul.

See you again in the Gloom.

Aye,

BB
