Some men in F3 are natural leaders. When they step up to Q (it appears) they are totally comfortable with the role and flow from one exercise to the next with ease. Not so for YHC. I awoke early wondering what to do. I know that without a basic plan, I will suffer from the “deer in the headlights” syndrome and revert to standing in front of the class for an oral presentation, tripping over my tongue.
But as I dressed for the chilly morning, I thought about the comments I read yesterday on Nextdoor regarding trick-or-treating on Halloween or Friday night as a result of the storms that passed through last night. I thought of my kids who went out last night and returned with large grocery bags overflowing with sugar and how other dads would be experiencing the same in their neighborhoods tonight. Why not prepare them for their annual candy collecting by trick-or-treating at Emmaus? So that’s just what we did.
THE THANG
At 0445 we moseyed to the parking deck behind Starbucks. In the far corner we circled up for SSH and Candy Cleanup on Aisle Six (aka Carrot Pullers). We coninued our mosey to Chipotle where we circled up again for IST and Windmills. Then we each grabbed a block.
Instinctively the pax circled up awaiting further instructions, but YHC threw them for a loop when he picked up his block and instructed them to follow. Mumblechatter ensued as we headed for the far parking area. It increased when we left the confines of Birkdale, along Sam Furr and on to the greenway. We stopped about 20 yards in to the greenway for some Curls and Burpees. We moved out of the way for a runner who turned out to be Ramrod.
After the exercises, we continued on to the overhead bridge where we stopped for Dips and Rocky Balboas. Chatter again commenced when we continued down the path rather than up the hill and back to Birkdale. We stopped again for some WWIIs and Skull Crushers before carrying our blocks up the hill and back to the fountain in front of the theater where we did Blerkins and Shoulder Press.
Not to sound like Bubba Gump, but there are several ways to carry a block: farmer’s carry in right and left hand, cradled against the chest, resting on either shoulder, zamperini, held on upper back behind head, etc. As we were heading back towards Starbucks followed by a left back to Chipotle, there was no position that didn’t burn. We stopped again in front of Barnes & Noble for Lawnmowers (right & left) before returning blocks.
We moseyed back to the corner of B&N for Monkey Humpers and Praying Mantis and then returned to the start point in front of Starbucks where we completed Captain Thors from 1-5 reps. I could have called another exercise with a minute to go, but I was smoked and instead opted for a recover, recover.
MOLESKIN
- Great seeing Red Cedar back in the game! I believe this is his 3rd or 4th post in a week. Be on the lookout for his cheesy ‘stache as he tries to collect money (and drop weight) before shaving it off.
- Crocs went with the short sleeves and kept his hands in his pockets whenever possible which had the effect of looking like he was bored with the entire workout.
- Carpetbagger makes workouts look easy, but is a great partner for keeping motivation strong.
- If Mr Owl ever figures out how many licks to the center of a Tootsie Pop, perhaps he can answer how Ramrod found us on the greenway and knew to bring a block.
- Stray was MIA to begin the workout and mysteriously showed up just as we were putting the blocks back.
- Jedi led the dicussion on apprenticeship for #qsource afterward. Getting YHC to Q this morning was a fine example of a virtuous leader making himself dispensible.
