To all PAX:

I've started to compile a list of best practices to promote safety across all AOs in the LKN region.  Please take a minute or two to read through the list.  If you have anything to share, please comment below.  Most of the tips apply to running, but as everyone knows, there is typically a standard run before every workout.  As the year continues, be on the lookout for additional safety related commz for updates and events such as the 6/15 non-certified CPR training at Mighty Jungle.

Best practices:

  • Stay alert on the way to and from a workout.  Watch out for those running The Standard or just those runners in general
  • Have a 911 emergency plan (phone access, assigned caller, address of AO)
  • COMMUNICATE!  This includes, but not limited to:
    • Disclaimer
    • Planned route with areas of concern or high traffic
    • Concern for injuries or slower PAX, watch the six.
    • In run commz like “car up”, “car back”, “car left”, “car right”, “man back”, “code brown”, “watch the six”, etc.
    • Try to run facing the oncoming traffic; if in a group, be sure to communicate with each other and stick together.
  • Wear reflective vests/clothing, head lamp and (2) blinkers (one on the front; one on the back)  Check out www.noxgear.com or your local running stores for reflective gear and/or head lamps.
  • Try to stay together or as a minimum of 2 person runs
  • Consider Pre-COT including counts for running only (both OTB and regular AO) if you anticipate varying paces to insure everyone is accounted for when they return; encourage PAX to disclose any concerns at running only AOs; if you do a Pre-COT pray over your brothers and for all of those in the gloom.
  • Plan routes off of or away from main roads; use and obey crosswalks
  • Be prepared for first aid/CPR/AED
  • Know the AED locations (PulsePoint App for emergency information, AED locations)
  • Encourage PAX to set up health app on smartphones for emergency calls
  • Encourage PAX to use Road ID (www.roadid.com)
  • Download app(s) (i.e. American Red Cross, National Safety Council, PulsePoint) for first aid/CPR/AED instructions
  • Recite and review disclaimer
  • Be aware of dogs at workouts; if a dog is present let the PAX know your plan if it involves potential high traffic areas so they can use a leash.
  • Remember, it’s YOU vs YOU!  If you have an injury, adapt to it and mind your doctor’s orders.  If you’re not feeling well, slow down, take it easy and let someone know.  Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are real.
  • Be your Brothers Keeper!
  • Stay mindful of hydration and electrolyte intake especially after a night of drinking. Replenish electrolytes either during or after long runs or long endurance type activities. For long runs, I like to use a gel pack and water every 5 miles even in the beginning.  I realize that may not work for everyone. Listen to your body and plan accordingly.
