Celebrating 8 Years with a Team Kamikaze

YHC awoke to a glorious morning. Mid 60s and clear with a cool breeze. I arrived a little early to check out the AO and was greeted by stadium lights lighting up the area we would be using. The sprinklers were running on the far side of the fields but that would not impact today’s plan. I passed 5 men that had departed for a standard while 1 was on a standard of his own around the track. At 0530 there were 12 men ready to see what an anniversary Q would do.

After a brief disclaimer and mention of a couple differences since the last time this workout was dished out, we moseyed to the rubber matted playground where we did some SSH, Cotton Pickers (the OG name) and Windmills. From there we moseyed to the far end of the lower fields and split into three groups of four. 66 arrived with canine in tow giving one team 5 members.

YHC passed out clones of his weinke to several members on each team which gave the basic details for the team kamikaze:

  1. Teammates begin AMRAP of 1st exercise on sideline
  2. Two pax run across field
  3. One begins AMRAP of 2nd exercise and one runs back across field
  4. Two pax run across field again while one (for a group of 4) remains behind and continues 1st exercise
  5. One runs back to beginning while 2 continue 2nd exercise
  6. Two run acorss field to join the 2 already across.
  7. Once all team members are on opposite end of field, ascend the hill to the next field and repeato

At each field (lower, middle, upper) the process of shuttling teammates across the field applied (2 over, 1 back) while AMRAP of an excercise was done by those not running:

  • Lower field: Squats, Merkins (Crawl Bear up the hill)
  • Middle field: LBC, CDD (Crab Walk up the hill)
  • Upper field: WWII, Monkey Humpers (Quadrophelia up the hill)

Once the entire team was on the far end of the upper field they would ascend the last hill and complete 5 burpees before descending the hill and working back to the beginning across the fields in the same format.

We managed to cross all 3 fields out and back with time left on the clock so we repeated the format again on the lower field, ascended the hill to the middle field and then circled up on the soccer field for MARY:

  • Suzanne Summers x20 (each leg) – Blackbeard
  • Box Cutters x15 IC – Kool Aid
  • Crunchy Frog x10 IC – Turnpike
  • ?? – 9-Lives
  • Burpees – 66

At 0615 we recovered x2, counted off and prayed it out. All loitered in the parking lot for a time; 5 reconvened for coffee and ACRT (ish). Many thanks to all that joined me this morning — I was worried we wouldn’t have enough men for two teams and was thrilled to have enough for three. It’s this camraderie that has kept me coming back for 8 years — about 16x longer than any other fitness routine I’ve ever attempted!

  • Backblasts weren’t as thorough in 2015, but there is evidence that 9-Lives was in attendance for the original Team Kamikaze. He was joined by 19 others including YHC, MiniMe, Earl Grey, Closing Time and Primetime
  • Gambini asked if I usually wore a headband implying I looked different this morning. The only guy I know that wears a headband is Uncle Rico and I’m flattered to be confused with him 🙂
  • TBone claims he has written 2 back blasts in 2022 which I will need to confirm that later today
  • Kool Aid (who was a solid teammate) immigrated from MECA (Skybrook) a few weeks ago but has yet to register and thus remains FNG-1 on the website 🙁
  • Turnpike turned down Fartlek to celebrate with me this morning. He was also so impressed with my weinke that he took a clone or two home with him
  • I am grateful that Tantrum set it up to have the stadium lights on for us this morning. All we were missing were parents on the sidelines to cheer us on
  • Lawn Dart ran to and from the workout this morning. That’s a solid half mile more than YHC put in today
  • Snake Eyes is still trying to get me to run with him again; one of these weeks persistence may pay off (but not today)
