Fightclub – Focus on the Neck

Event Date

Mar 10, 2017

YHC arrived early to prepare for Fightclub only to find two #ruckers finishing up their much earlier workout.  @cupcake and @comet took it upon themselves to put on heavy backpacks and then walk in circles around the field.  This is a fairly common event but with the Quarter Ruck starting later in the day YHC was surprised that these warriors did not take a rest this morning.  Also joining us this morning was a very large (think Ivan Putsky (1980's fake wrestler) large or the Crusher from Bugs Bunny Cartoons,, we are talking BIG) FNG named John Rowan.  Welcome John.

YHC took care not to injure these (and the rest of the) ruckers before this grueling event tonight.  But @Contra, @Finger-Licking-Good and @Motorboat caught a bit of pain.  (We must feel it to understand it).  There are a good number of targets that become the focus of attacks during a battle,, but the Neck has become a favorite due to its constant exposure and ease of access.  Unfortunately it requires us to move into close proximity in order to apply these techniques, which can put us at a disadvantage if we fail to control the weapons and balance of the opponenet.

In keeping with the direction of last weeks Fightclub, we started off with "Sentry Destruction" techniques.  These are designed to quickly (and quietly) disable the opponent.  The first tehnique is designed to seperate the brain stem from the rest of the spine.  Yes,  it is a severe move and should only be used when a deadly force condition exists.  Once again YHC will not describe these techniques here to avoid injuries that can (and will ) occur when proper instruction is not given.  We then moved into a standing figure 4 choke and the transition to the ground while maintaining control.  This is a standard and basic move for all of you MMA fighters out there.  We then practiced getting into the figure 4 choke from the ground postions,,, both on top and on the bottom.

Once these were practiced sufficiently we rewound the tape and practiced the Sentry destruction techniques from the past two weeks.  Yes, most use the control of the head and neck to attain the desired result.

There are four main targets on the front of the neck, one on the side and one on the back.  We focused on strikes and control directed at three of these targets on the front aspect of the neck.  The carotid split, upper and lower ascending vertebral artery.  Utilizing the "can Opener" strike we pinned these arteries against the spinal column to achieve control of the head and neck,,, thereby controlling the movement of the opponent.  This causes a fair amount of pain but is less dangerous then one may think,,( unless the practicioner trains the hands to "travel within").  The resulting pain and controlled balance affords the attacker the ability to transition into a position of advantage.

The rain started coming down pretty heavy at this point and many had to rescue their phones and clothing from the soaking rain.  But training continued under the tarp but the wing takedown practiced was postponed for a dryer day.

The hand and legs drills were touched upon in order to reinforce the training of days past.  Constant retracement of these techniques develops an automated response to a variety of circumstances.  A question was raised (Cupcake) about how a person was to know what technique to use for any given situation.  In the beginning,, the choice is typically preplanned and timed according to the reaction of the opponent.  Once training progresses, the techniques will be determined and dictated by the position and intent of the opponent.  A variety of moves and techniques will be attached to body part and targets,, when these are exposed or presented the mind and body will eventually respond without the pre-thought or planning stage.  It becomes a fluid dynamic between the two involved in battle.  If a person focuses on controlling the balance, movement and rotation of the other,,, the moves will make far more sense.  Motorboat, Contra and Finger-licking- good had to endure a bit of extra pain this morning.  But the sacrafise was clearly a benefit to the rest of the fine men training this morning.  And in YHC's mind,, you need to feel it to understand it.  This goes for having the move done on each of us,, and also doing the techniques on others.  There is a vast divide that exists between learning the moves and being both physically and mentally able to perform the moves effectively.   Desensitizing ourselves to pain in helpful in battle,, but detaching the emotions linked to causing pain in others is a necessity.

Contra broke off to instruct the arriving Bible study group.  They were certain to be asking for forgiveness for learning and practicing such destructive techniques. But a rationalization can be effective in this day and age, giving some justification for the application of drastic measures.  It is the intent of the person that matters and not the means used to defend ourselves and our families.

Thank you once again for allowing YHC to train with you fine men.  I pray that no one needs to deploy these techniques but if it becomes necessary may you each find the ability to overcome the attack in order to protect your family or yourself.
