Ko-BBBroga Kai

Event Date

Oct 13, 2020

So much to cover, YHC wonders if there is a character maximum here.  As Scope and I began our walk, we had no idea what was in store for our session this morning.  We arrived back at the lot to find Finkle, Hefty and Mater waiting for us.  There was some light chatter as the stretching began – a recap of a visit to LKN Brewery and the sampling of a new Pizza Dog (which was delicious).  YHC was reminded of a conversation that took place during an unscheduled 2nd F activity, initiated by Finkle's obsession with a certain Netflix original based on the adulthood of one Daniel LaRussa his nemesis we know as 'Johnny'.  You guessed it, the continuation of The Karate Kid, 34 years later, Kobra Kai.  It has been seen by many and there is much to cover.

At first, there discussion around the shock that YHC and my M had not binged both season 1 & 2 since Saturday.  That shock quickly transitioned to utter disbelief as two of the PAX (who will remain unnamed to allow readers to remain unbiased) debated which of Daniel and Johnny was good and which was evil.  The discussion started with most of the PAX in a state of zen.  That state was short lived.  The Q wondered to himself, is it possible the powers of karate have been absorbed by these men through hours of binge watching floor sanding, wax application and craning?  Is it possible we will witness an exhibition of martial arts in The Gates I pool parking lot to settle the debate?  Will these men come to blows with only one left standing?  Fortunately (mostly) it did not.  The discussion was real however.  A few questions that remain unanswered

  1. Is any character donning a black robe/cape the bad guy?  Darth Vader vs Luke Skywalker, Batman vs The Joker and now Kobra Kai vs Miyagi Do
  2. Was Johnny the good guy in the original?  After all, he lost and 34 years later the story continues
  3. When will Elizabeth Shue make an appearance?  Prioritization of viewing may be impacted.

To appease the masses, YHC has saved Kobra Kai to the Watch List in Netflix.  Several mental notes were made while scrolling to find it:

  • Scroll past Popular and What's Trending – hmmmm, based on the rave reviews provided I expected this to be first in both categories
  • Skip Crime – First, karate is self defense, but if you're using karate, is a crime being committed against you?  Deep thoughts.  Second, watching the trailer there are kids fighting in the cafeteria at school, car windows being smashed, I'm pretty sure there was some public drunkenness by Johnny.
  • Stop in Recently Watched, let the Wrong Missy trailer play, giggle to yourself, then move on
  • Scan Top 10 in the US Today – then ask yourself how this a  different category than both Popular and Trending
  • Check New Releases – put it on your calendar, it had better be there January 8 2021, that date has been talked about at BBBroga more than Election Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Arbor Day and all of our birthdays and anniversaries combined
  • Found it in Netflix Originals – about 8th on the list sandwiched between The Social Dilemna (which I'm feeling as it relates to watching Kobra Kai) and Hubie Halloween (which I hear will make us dumber for watching)

In other news:

  • Scope got a copperhead yesterday, left the severed head & body in the yard with the shovel sticking out so all copperheads can see
  • A discussion about the National Lampoon's Vacation series started, though there were many different opinions and could've spent some time there, we quickly reverted to Kobra Kai (DYK – Johnny from The Karate Kid was Audreys' boyfriend in European Vacation and he was a bad guy saying she ate too much)
  • Hefty maintaining perfect attendance at Royal Bliss yoga on Saturday, they kept it under the porch and had a femail instructor leading!

It truly was the best MC ever heard at BBBroga.  YHC trying to do it justice. There were tears in my eyes from both crying from laughter and the traumatization that a group of grown men could have such passionate feelings about a fictional story that originated 34 years ago   Final note, it was stated that during Thursday Bible Study, we are covering the book of John.  And on this day, we studied the book of Johnny.  You can't make this stuff up.

Pleasure to lead.  Namaste, Bertha
