Mama Said Knock You Out

Nine participants from the NBA’s developmental league (G League) came to the Quarry on a Tuesday in response to yet another pre-blast referencing a random song with accompanying lyrics that may or may not actually have anything to do the workout. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Knockout – Mosey to basketball courts. While some knew how to play, for the avoidance of doubt and limits on questions, the following rules and instructions were shared

  • Form a single file line at the foul line handing the balls to the first two players in the line. The first player will shoot, once they have gotten their shot off, the player behind them may shoot.

  • Everybody's first shot must be taken from the free-throw line

  • If the first shooter makes a basket before the second, they hand the ball to the next person in line. IF you make a shot, come back to free throw line and do a called exercise before getting back in line (Round 1 = 5 Mercans, Round 2 = 5 CDD, Round 3 = 5 lunges)

  • If the second shooter makes a basket before the first, the first shooter is eliminated. Once eliminated, do a called exercise when knocked out (Rounds 1 and 2 = lap around track, Round 3 = 1 minute plank). The balls are then handed to the next two players in line and play resumes.

  • The order of the players can never change during the game.

  • We stopped doing the called reps after a made shot once we were down to three players remaining

  • The game continues until all but one player has been knocked out. This one talented player is crowned the winner!

  • "Mama Said Knock You Out" is a hit single by LL Cool J from his album of the same name. The song famously begins with the line "Don't call it a comeback/I've been here for years." LL Cool J said in his autobiography that the idea for the song came from a discussion with his grandmother. He had said to his grandmother that he felt that he couldn't survive as a rapper now that gangsta rap was popular and he was being dissed by several up-and-coming rappers. She responded, "Oh baby, just knock them out!" The song also takes various shots at Kool Moe Dee

  • While this genre may not be everybody’s cup of tea, the Unplugged live version of this song is dope

  • The rims at the Quarry are not what you would call forgiving

  • Unofficial scoring of the three rounds of Knockout:

    • Round 1 winner – Ozzie (the gloved one)

    • Round 2 winner – El Tigre (after an epic final showdown between him and Pinky)

    • Rounds 3 winner – Natty Lite (my game, my rules)

  • Unofficial feedback received would indicate that Knockout was very well received and just may make a return appearance in the future

  • The Clydesdale and Athena competitive divisions are based on weight minimums outlined in the USA Triathlon Competitive Rules. Athletes competing in the Clydesdale division must be a minimum of 220 pounds and athletes in the Athena division must be a minimum of 165 pounds.

  • Athena’s declaring their status and competing in the Athena division have a scarlet “A” written in marker on the back of their calf denoting their division they are competing in.One fun spectator sport at triathlons is trying to determine just who the “undeclared” Athena’s may be that are competing in the triathlon

  • Yeah, I could have went to the NBA. But I wanted to mess around with bee-atches

  • Prayers lifted up for the family of Officer Jordan Sheldon of the Mooresville police department who was killed in the line of duty Saturday night. His parents live in Riverbend (Quarry Hood) and there has been a memorial set up in the front of the neighborhood as you exit.

  • Great work men!
