Mr. Holland vs Blackbeard w/ 34 PAX present where Mr. H came out on top. All 4 judges were present.

Blackbeard should get bonus points for thinking about splitting the large group into 2 instead of each of us leading the big group. Recount?

Blackbeard’s Thang:

First off, hats off for Mr Holland who earns the right to go up against the defending champion in R2; I’m fairly certain I wouldn’t have been able to compete with TF. I’m told I lost points for not watching the 6 at all times, too much time spent standing around and not having a theme for my workout. I appreciate the judges sharing to know what I need to focus on for improvement.

I noticed Mr Holland checking out the “pull up bars” along the road before we started. I mentioned that I had considered those after #coffeeteria on Saturday and decided the 2 wood screws on either end might not be sufficient for holding the weight of all the pax. I also considered the stairs, but with a bum Achilles, I opted to skip that. I’m glad we decided to split the pax so that I didn’t have to run the steps with my opponent!

Instead, I had the two groups start with “Painting the Lines” along the parking spaces adjacent to the road. After that I tried to make use of the 4×4 beams and curb along the road for group 1, but that was a failure (probably a point deduction too) and silently audibled to the chairs behind the ‘bou for Pinky Pies (I skipped the curb for group 2 – hey, I learn from my mistakes!).

We put the chairs back and headed for a dry section of asphalt where we did two exercises:

  • Absolution (aka ab-solution): an 8-count exercise consisting of forward leaning rest, a groiner (1, 2), down to an elbow plank (3, 4), a plank jack (5, 6), and back to forward leaning rest (7, 8).
  • Dive Bomb Merkin: start in downward dog with hands forward and drop your hips as your shoulders move forward over hands to bring you into the hover portion of a merkin

I reversed the order of the 2 exercises for group 2 and was on my knees for the merkins after 5 reps (which probably earned another deduction) — “don’t do it if you can’t Q it!”

Since group 2 skipped the fiasco at the road, I added a People’s Chair on the wall around one of the garbage containers and had the pax run around the structure while we all sat. This also proved to be a bit excessive and led to guys standing around. Finally, we knocked out some Praying Mantis’ (well, except for MacBeth who was peeking ’round the corner to see when we finished).

Pirate Ponderings

Despite the loss, I really enjoyed seeing such a large turnout including several pax I usually don’t see often. It reminded me of the “good old days” when there was more “fraternity” instead of smaller cliques. I would love to see Isotope encourage more “convergences” to get everyone together more often!
