Memorial Day 2022

It's Memorial Day, the day we formally honor and mourn those in our armed forces who were lost in service. Every year when I was a young boy, my mother’s family would gather in Madison, Kansas, a small Flint Hills town tucked in the tallgrass prairie, where we’d share a meal and then go to the cemetery to honor the family members and friends who died serving our country. I remember peonies were always in bloom and flags fluttered at the headstone of each serviceman. I also remember the complete and utter respect that was shown to those individuals who gave their lives protecting our freedoms.

The circle of remembrance has naturally broadened as a few of us do, but many don’t, have a direct connection to someone who died in service to our country. So, when we think of Memorial Day, we begin with all in the military who sacrificed while serving, then move to remembering those who served and then finally, loved ones we’ve lost. It’s a respectful progression from honoring those who died protecting our freedoms to remembering those for whom freedom was a gift.

I recently learned of an organization that is taking a unique approach to help us do exactly that, no matter where we are. Taps Across America enlists everyday musicians – young and old – to play Taps at 3 p.m. local time wherever they may be. It’s an effort to bring us all together for a moment to “honor, remember and reflect in the true spirit of Memorial Day.” Whatever our differences, we are a blessed people.

My thanks to the many of you who are flying this weekend, carrying our customers to their celebrations. If you’re not flying, I hope you are able to safely enjoy your time with friends and family. And, if you hear that familiar bugle call, please stop, place your hand over your heart and consider all that has been given, so that we may live in the country we love.

With honor and respect
