Tamale Tuesday!?

Event Date

Mar 19, 2019

Turncoat and Ramrod had conflicts, so YHC was at the helm today.  After last week's debacle I needed a safe, quality pick.  First instinct was to call for Que Onda or The Local, but I'm pretty sure we've been at least twice now each (maybe thrice or more?), and recently in both cases.  I decided the only unique selection with a quality offering would be the burrito man himself; Johnny Burrito.

For those who do not know the legend of Johnny Burrito, this is a Charlotte instituion.  Located in the basement of Two Wells, it's a bit of a hidden gem.  I don't know exactly when they opened, but am confident it's been open at least 20 years – possibly Charlotte's longest tenured lunch spot.  The bank above it has changed names/brands twice now (First Union to Wachovia to Wells Fargo), but the Johnny Burrito remains steadfast.  It's the kind of place you would NEVER stumble onto – you only find out about it when you bring a friend.  Today was Squiggy's first visit, so he got the rookie card and I recieved many humble thanks for bringing fresh meat to the burrito man.

Admittedly, I was skeptical a true taco offering would be available.  I've heard rumors they do some unique stuff once or twice a week, thought maybe tacos might be the Tuesday thing.  I've gone on Friday before and gotten tamales.  Well, Tuesdays are ALSO tamale day.

After some initial logistical challenges, I met up with Squiggy already in line – and we went with the tamales.  No regrets, none at all.  Sweet and Spicy BBQ tamales (there were four options) with a heaping of everything, nicely tucked into a styrofoam box… what more can you ask for?  I think we’ll be back, as several pax noted loving Johnny Burrito, others having always wanted to try it.  Great rainy day option since it's right in the middle of Uptown, and also inside – with skywalks connecting most of the way.  Just don't go expecting a taco…

PS:  We were also kinda joined by Wegmans and The World Wide Leader.  Actually, we stole their table as they were wrapping up.
