REFLECTION

Matthew 24:42-44

42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.

44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

On the way home from a fun day at Carowinds with my sons yesterday, we came upon a fairly serious traffic accident in front of Hills Chapel Church.  Three cars had been totaled, two of them hit head-on.

One vehicle had four occupants: it appeared to be a set of grandparents with their daughter and grand-daughter (about 7 or 8).  The driver of that car had some cuts to his face and was bleeding somewhat badly but, otherwise, the family was mainly just shaken up.

Another vehicle, a pickup truck (one of the head-on colliders) had a young man who seemed quite dazed and had a knot and a cut on his forehead even though his airbags had deployed (all of the vehicles had their airbags deployed).  He was walking around ok but was in obvious pain.

The other vehicle was a blue minivan driven by an expectant mother (26 weeks) who was somewhat trapped as she had broken one ankle and the other leg (as I understand it) and was obviously concerned about her unborn child. (we would learn later that it looks like he/she is going to be ok)

It was amazing to me that everyone was conscious and without life threatening injuries.  Apparently, the driver of the truck may not have been in a condition to be driving and has had issues with impaired driving before (speaking strictly on rumor on that point, but in hindsight, his ‘dazed’ state certainly could have been caused by something other than a knock to the head).

What it really got me thinking about was how it could have been us – me and my boys.  We weren’t there but a minute after the accident.  Neither of the other cars involved had any idea what was about to happen to them – and it could have been worse.

It got me thinking about how we are constantly exposed to perils that could change our lives (or end them) in an instant and we rarely, if ever, will see them coming.  Some of our own have had recent experiences like this that could have turned out very differently.

Matthew 24: 42-44 is often seen in its context of Jesus explaining His return to the disciples and letting them know that they will have no idea when it is going to happen.  But today, I am reading that passage in a slightly different light.  I am viewing it from the perspective of being ready, not only for His return to us, but for our potential journey to Him.

What are we doing – today – to make sure that we are ready?

Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect”

MOLESKIN

  • Nice turnout for an early-morning workout (except…ahem…the gentleman who asked “where the hell is everyone?” this past Saturday 😉 ) – you knew Clark wasn’t gonna let that slide, right? 😛
  • Slight Q-fail on the timer resulted in an unexpected 10-second preparation stint each round that no one noticed until Ziplock caught our sexy trainer voice calling it out.  Rounds were actually 3:40. So, we got an extra 10-seconds of exercise each round without knowing it…
  • Not exactly sure what kind of Wheaties Abrams eats but damn! Boy has got wheels that don’t quit!
  • End the BTW round about 20 seconds early to make sure no one fainted when we took off running for the next round.
  • As always, an honor to lead and a privilege to be a part of this.
