IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORKOUT

Mighty Jungle got it’s start on February 1st, 2014 after Moses approached Fr Arnsbarger, then pastor at St Mark, to see if he would allow a workout to take place on the church campus. Word is that St Mark was very receptive of hosting a group of men eager to encourage leaders in the Huntersville area. The first MQ was Crimson (who apparently took Callahan as an apprentice). At the time, many of the workouts included warm-ups around the fountain and time spent in the meditation garden and/or on the school field. Crimson/Callahan would continue to Q for the next two years.

In 2016, Crimson was ready to move on to other leadership opportunities and sought out a replacement. At the time, YHC declined a personal offer but suggested Rocket might be interested as he was one of the regulars at that time. Rocket did a stellar job at keeping the momentum going, and per the bar that Crimson set also served in the MQ capacity for two years.

YHC mentioned towards the end of that period that I would be interested in taking a turn. Numbers were down at Saturday workouts in general from the early years and St Mark was rumored to have some negative thoughts about F3 for various reasons. My goal was to try to encourage the pax to return to Saturday morning bootcamps while improving our relations with the parish. To accomplish the latter, we spent a day in service by distributing mulch around the campus. YHC also makes it a point to scan the campus to ensure F3 does not leave a mess for the other chuch members to see on Sunday mornings. For the former, we continue to recruit Qs outside the normal attendees to bring in fresh faces. If you have not Q’d at Mighty Jungle, please consider sharing your talent with us in 2019.

AND THE WORKOUT WAS WITH F3

At the top of the hour, we moseyed to the far end of the parking lot where we ovaled up for the warmup. We still had men rolling in as YHC led us from the center of the circle in various warm up exercises. SSH, IST, Merkins and Windmills were included along with some other typical calisthenics. Then we counted off by threes to split into groups with each of the MQs: “Crim-allahan”, Rocket and YHC.

We had previously determined 4 locations for the 3 groups to circumnavigate: (1) Blocks/Pull Up Bars, (2) School/Retaining Wall, (3) Roundabout, and (4) Copperhead Hill. Each of the three groups would move between 3 of the 4 locations for 45 minutes (ish) after which we would reassemble for Mary.

The leaders more or less followed this plan. There was only one time that YHC’s gang risked a turf war at the retaining wall with Rocket’s posse, but the encounter ended peacefully as they moved off to the school and we relocated to the roundabout.

With about 10 minutes to go, all three groups reconvened at the back corner of the parking lot where Callahan led us in some ab work before passing the baton to Rocket who decided burpees were in order to end the workout. He would be dutifully bang-banged in the CoT by Outlaw..

Many thanks to all that chose to celebrate with us this morning. As current MQ, I am glad to see 34 men make it out, and hope all make it a point to return now and then to share fellowship (and fitness) with the regulars!

AND THE WORKOUT WAS F3

  • First workout of the week that started above freezing
  • Hayden was our FNG this morning. We look forward to his 2nd post and naming.
  • Olaf wins the award for farthest commute with about 45 minutes from Clover, SC
  • Scrappy called out Friday and Springfield on Twitter and it actually worked (great to see them again)
  • Motor Pool is a month in to F3 and down 10#
  • Twister’s “Patty Cake” (aka the elbow-friendly Makhtar N’Diaye) was a crowd favorite in YHC’s group
  • YHC asked Goat to lead us in a Mobility Minute where he felt the need to add merkins
  • Friday has an impressive vertical jump — about as high as Judge Scrappy is tall!
  • In Q-Source we talked about failure as a part of leadership development. YHC has embraced that as part of my Q responsibilities. TClaps to the pax for following me anyway.
  • Great to have Special Sauce, Perrier and Waffle House with us. Rarely see them these days (it’s me, not you)
  • Hoping Rocket and “Crim-allahan” add some of their perspectives and outtakes in the comments

YHC started my F3 career in April of 2014 at Mighty Jungle. I did not realize at the time that the AO was only 3 months old. I still talk about my first post with Callahan as Q where I managed some half-ass SSH and Merkins before essentially walking the rest of the 60 minutes. In no other scenario would I see myself sticking with a fitness regimen for 4+ years. All credit to the men of F3 LKN for making this a routine in my otherwise sedentary lifestyle. I am honored to add my name to the list of #HIMs that have led at Mighty Jungle and I look forward to it being a mainstay for Saturday’s fitness, fellowship and faith in the LKN region. Aye!
